Instead of a pencil, Deng Yu sketches most of his paintings with a “bamboo brush(竹刷,zhú shuā)”. Inspired by Chinese writing brushes(毛笔,máo bǐ), his brush is made of bamboo twigs, and represents his latest attempt to create(创造,chuàng zào) unpredictability in splatter effects.

“After trying various materials(材料,cái liào), including paper, plastic and styrofoam, I found the handmade(手工的,shǒu gōng de) bamboo brush handles the heavy and thick acrylic paint well. On canvas(画布,huà bù), its effect is close to the art of Chinese calligraphy(书法,shū fǎ),” the 44-year-old artist from Shenyang, Liaoning province, said.

Through Western color and Chinese painting techniques(技巧,jì qiǎo), Deng has been looking for an intersection between Eastern and Western art styles. With the unpredictable painting effects(效果,xiào guǒ) of these tools, he also wants to defend the art field in the expansion of artificial intelligence.

His painting technique has gone viral(走红,zǒu hóng) on short video platform(短视频平台,duǎn shì pín píng tái) Douyin(抖音Tik Tok), with his breakout video showing his process of painting Qitian Dasheng(齐天大圣,qí tiān dà shèng) (Monkey King) winning more than 408,000 likes. He has about 200,000 followers on the platform.
